Welcome to
Lee County -- The Gateway to the Real Southwest Virginia
Lee County was established in 1792 and named for Henry "Light
Horse" Lee, a revolutionary hero and governor of Virginia
(1791-1794). History has always played an important role in Lee
County. When Daniel Boone first came upon Cumberland Gap, he had
nothing but a trail to follow and a desire to find a better place
and new opportunities. Since then, hundreds of pioneers have crossed
this pass to find a new frontier and a new future. We have come
a long way from having just a trail to follow. Cumberland Gap
Tunnel allows new age frontiersmen and travelers safe passage
to endless adventures and opportunities, giving them a four lane
highway to Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia, attracting new industry
and businesses to our area.
